Until the Barones Reach Kennedy Status

When reviewing my future, I often start with the final product. A house, wife, two kids, maybe a dog, or a pet robot dog, whatever is more fashionable. I want a house moderately larger than where I live now, with much more land. I also want to be able to grant my children the benefit of being able to explore whatever possiblities they want, and experience everything they need to make the correct choice of a career. I am a strong believer in each generation moving one step further than the last in my family. My father came from a mountain village in Italy and obtained a Master's Degree in the US. My mother obtained only a GED. They both came from living in apartments their whole lives, and were both able to purchase a moderately sized house. I appreciate that I was able to experience a number of liesures in moderation. However, with no disrespect to them, I want to do better. I aspire for an even larger home, and more luxury than what I lived with. Now I must break down how to obtain this.

Of course, this is all obtainable through a job that pays more than my fathers'. To obtain such a job I must be an attractive candidate for employers. What degree must I get? What experience do I have? What activities have I done besides school? Through analysis of this I can develop a list in the order to reach the final goal.

1) I must be a member of the Accounting Society. To do this I must attend six meetings. I want to be a member before May so that by May I can

2) Run for Secretary of the Accounting Society. After obtaining this position (hopefully for the Fall semester), and using my experience to my advantage, I can then

3) Run for President of the Accounting Society. I can then use this for experience and a large highlight on my resume.

4) While attempting to obtain these positions, I must also obtain an accounting-related internship. I have already went on several interviews for the summer.

5) After doing steps 1-4 I can than confidently apply for an internship in a Big 4 Accounting Firm. Hopefully through the internship, I will be hired, thus providing funds in the future for my first house purchase. From there, the variables can be mixed, such as selling and purchasing a larger home, and when to throw marriage in.

Although, this lacks the "what do you really want to be when you grow up" outlook (which was a firefighter, but due to the complete underpay of NYC firefighters, it will be extremely difficult to move my family up a notch in this generation), the main goal that would make me happiest is to provide the most financial happiness to my future family.

The ultimate, extremely long term goal is to provide my children with the funds to go to a better college than me, or have their try at their own business. I would like to see my family reach a point one day, that our wealth reaches that of what a Kennedy posesses today, and I believe it is possible if I continue the process in which the family that came before me began.

...and the Hip Hop music, DJing, and charities

By the way, what is your stage name?

I like your logic, and definately support your goal of growing a step further than your parents. With my parents both having master degrees, and my mom being a college professor - it will be hard to challenge them intellectually, but I will also try to do my best. Think big, believe in yourself, and you will make it! =)

Dont know what happened with my previous post.. it says deleted by author..something which i didnt do.. neway, thankfully i had copied it before I submitted it.. hehe. here is what I wrote b4:

Well, Mr. Barone-Kennedy,
you definitely know what you want in the future. You seem to have it all worked out in your head and even articulate it and support it in a series of steps necessary to make your vision reality. It is a great thing to be able to envision what you want to attain and slowly moving toward its accomplishment. I really hope you can provide your future children and wife with the funds that will make their dreams soar and their ambitions tangible. Your plan is pretty neat, so I dont see the reason why you won't be able to become who you want to be. Parents are most of the time the ones that leak their dreams, beliefs, hopes and values into ours and they influence greatly the way we envision ourselves in the future. I believe your parents have done their part-- 'doing better' is your turn-- now you have to do your part; you can justify their existence and the way they brought you up, by finding and holding on tightly to what motivates you to keep going. Take advantage of it and fast forward to that day, when you are to who you want to be.
Best of luck!!

I defiantley agree with your concept of passing the level of your parents. I say that because that is an underlining goal that has always been apart of me. My mom always encourages me to do better than her and every one else in my family. With this encouragement I continue to hold fast to my visions. I definately agree with your logic. I also see that you have set specific goals for you to work at one of the big four accounting firms. I wish you luck on all of those goals.

I like your title. I like the fact that you have high aspirations. You write in your description that you want an internship in the accounting field. Other than the whole idea of becoming a CPA i think that the internship plan is the most important. In our day i believe that the job market is highly competitive and it is very difficult to find a good job. One, even a few internships could prove to become a real asset in finding a great job.

Hi, Stefan,
I think this is the first time to visit your blog, and I enjoyed reading it.
About vision, I liked your detail action plan and was surprised how you think about your future at your age, 20. When I was twenty, I never thought about my future, family, or even about my career. I think I was just thinking how to have fun at that age. For me, you are such an early bird…
From your blog, I got the sense that you think that stepping up financially and educationally is important for each generation. I am just curious: how do you feel if your children do not want to go to a better college, for example if they want to be artists or musicians, or live all by themselves in the mountains? What would you do?

I think that you have a set direction in your life and are using the right tools especially education to get it. Like you mentioned that your father got a masters degree and was able to get a decent size house, he can be your insporation to do much more and get more than what he got.

Your aspect of doing more than your father is realistic. I am a mother and I can tell you that every parent wants their child to reach those heights which they only used to dream of. I admire your vision at such a young age and I am positive that you will get there.

All the best!!!

I'm a very systematic person and so i enjoyed reading your step by step walkthrough. Although I like the whole "Kennedy Status" goal, I'd like to know more about goals related to other aspects of your life.. what happened to music and making a difference in a broken world where no one seems to care about anything anymore.

You have a very well reasoned vision, and it is coupled with an action plan that makes the whole picture seem attainable.

Don't lose sight of your passions, though, the things that make you want to wake up in the morning to face that future accounting job. These are integral to your long term happiness.

Best wishes!

I think you're up to a great start in planning your future :) You developed a set of small goals that will finally lead to a large one, getting a good job. This is the way to go. Braking down the goal makes it manageable. I like your tought process. Good luck!

I like your blog Stefan. You are right in a sense that not everyone wishes to have ten houses and ten cars to be happy. All of this material stuff is only there, if you have no happiness in your life. If you are a family orientated person like yourself, do not change anything about it.

I can definitely relate to your post. Its almost I mirror image of the way I think about my life right now, and how I've thought about my life in the past. I've always had the determination that I must do better than my parents have done, in order to provide more for my children and indeed for myself.
As is usually said, Accounting is te language of business, so obtaining your accounting degree will be beneficial to you. It will definitely give you the start that you desire. I'm an accounting major myself, and I've interned at a "big four" accounting firm as well. It was quite a rewarding experience and I would definitely recommend that you go for it.
